Why is my website not showing up in AI search?

Usually one of four things: your robots.txt blocks the AI crawlers, no page of yours answers the question directly, the engines trust a competitor or a directory more, or nobody has asked. Check crawler access first, because it is the only one that blocks everything else from working.

First: are the AI crawlers allowed in

Several AI companies use separate crawlers for different jobs. Some fetch a page because a user asked a question right now, some collect pages for training. Blocking them is a legitimate choice, but many sites block them by accident, having copied a robots.txt snippet from a blog post, and then wonder why they never appear.

This is worth checking before anything else, because if the citation crawlers cannot fetch your pages, no amount of writing will help. Our guide on letting AI crawlers read your site covers which agent does which job.

Second: does a page of yours actually answer the question

Engines quote answers. If your site covers a topic across a services page, a portfolio and an about page, but no single page answers the question in plain words, there is nothing to lift.

The test is simple and unforgiving: find the sentence on your site that answers the question, copy it out on its own, and see whether it still makes sense and still convinces. If you cannot find that sentence, that is the work.

Third: something else is trusted more

For many commercial questions the engines lean on directories, roundups, review sites and forums rather than the businesses themselves. That is not unfair, it is a reasonable response to the fact that every business claims to be the best.

When that is what is happening, the fastest route is to be present on the page the engine already trusts. Getting listed or reviewed is often quicker than out-ranking a page that has years of authority behind it.

Fourth: the question may just be rare

If nobody asks the question, nobody gets cited for it. Before investing in a topic, check whether it is a question people actually ask, using your own Search Console data as the evidence rather than a hunch.

What not to conclude

Absence from one answer on one day is not a verdict. Answer engines vary their responses, so the same prompt can name you today and skip you tomorrow. Judge it on a fixed set of questions asked repeatedly, with dates recorded, not on a single disappointing screenshot.

Common questions

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
There is no reliable published figure, and anyone quoting you a precise number is guessing. What is observable: pages that answer a question directly and are allowed to be crawled tend to be picked up faster than pages that need interpreting.
Does blocking AI crawlers hurt my Google ranking?
Blocking an AI company's crawler does not affect Googlebot, which is separate. Blocking Google's own AI-related fetchers can affect whether you appear in AI Overviews. Decide the two questions separately rather than blocking everything at once.
Should I write pages specifically for AI?
Write pages for people, then make sure the answer is stated plainly near the top and the page can be crawled. Content written purely for machines tends to read poorly, and the qualities engines reward are the same ones readers reward.
