What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a specific answer on your page the one an AI assistant selects when it responds to a question. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AEO competes to be one of the few sources a generated answer quotes and credits.
The difference in one sentence
SEO earns you a place in a list of ten links and lets the reader choose. AEO earns you a place inside the answer itself, where there is no list and usually only a handful of sources are credited.
That changes the unit of work. In SEO the unit is a page competing for a phrase. In AEO the unit is a specific claim, definition, comparison or number that an engine can lift and attribute.
AEO, GEO and SEO
The terms overlap and the industry has not settled them. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is usually the broader label covering everything to do with being visible inside AI-generated output. Answer engine optimization is normally used for the narrower job of being the source selected for a particular answer.
The practical distinction is small enough that you can treat them as one discipline with two emphases. Anyone selling you a rigid boundary between them is selling you a framework, not a result.
What actually gets a page quoted
Answer the question in the first paragraph, in a way that survives being lifted out of the page. If your answer only makes sense with the three paragraphs above it, an engine cannot use it.
Be specific enough to be worth citing. A model has a hundred pages saying a thing is important. It has very few saying exactly how much, measured how, on what date. Original numbers, methods and worked examples are the strongest citation magnets available to a small site.
Make the page structurally legible: a real heading structure, a direct question and answer, and structured data that tells a machine which part is the answer.
What does not work
Stuffing a page with question-shaped headings that never answer anything. Engines are quoting text, so a heading with no quotable sentence under it earns nothing.
Writing for a model rather than a person. The pages that get cited read well to humans first, because the signals engines lean on, clarity, specificity and evidence of expertise, are the same things a careful reader wants.
Common questions
- Is AEO replacing SEO?
- No. They share most of the same work: clear pages, real expertise, a site a crawler can read. AEO adds an emphasis on self-contained answers and citable specifics. A site with good SEO fundamentals is already most of the way to being quotable.
- How is AEO measured?
- By asking answer engines a fixed set of real customer questions on a schedule and recording whether you were named, whether you were cited, and which pages were credited instead. There is no equivalent of a rank position, because there is no single stable list.
- Do I need different content for AEO?
- Usually not different content, but often a different opening. Most pages bury their answer under an introduction. Moving the direct answer to the top, in language that stands alone, is the single highest-value change for most sites.
