Quick verdict
Ahrefs is a research database: buy it to study backlinks, keywords and sites you have no access to. Sondavo reads one site you do own, using your own Google data, and explains what to fix in plain English. If link research is your job, Ahrefs wins and Sondavo is not a substitute.

What is Sondavo?
Sondavo reads one website and tells its owner, in plain English, where it stands. It connects to your Google Search Console account, so the figures for your own site are Google’s own rather than an estimate of them; it crawls your pages against eighteen named fault types and explains each one with the pages affected; it produces a ranked list of opportunities from your own data and measures what happens when you act on one; and from the £49 plan it asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions you approve and records who they name.
Plans are £0, £19, £49 and £149 a month in sterling, billed monthly. Eight tools are published free with no account and no card, and they run on any address including one you do not own. There is no research index behind Sondavo, and it does not claim one: the features page lists only what is built today.
What you actually get
What a Sondavo report looks like
The free check on any address, with no account. This one is our own site.

The keyword checker runs on any address, including a competitor's, with no sign-up and no ownership verification. That is the one thing Ahrefs' free tier cannot do. To read your own Google Search Console history instead, run the free check on the home page.
What is Ahrefs?
Ahrefs is a search marketing platform built around a crawler of its own that has been indexing the web since 2010. The company sells access to that index: backlinks, referring domains, keyword volumes, traffic estimates and historical positions, for any address you care to type in. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer and Site Audit are the three tools most people are actually paying for.
Pricing in sterling runs Starter at £23 a month, Lite at £99, Standard at £199, Advanced at £359 and Enterprise at £1,199 on an annual commitment. Lite includes five projects, 750 tracked keywords and six months of history; the ceilings rise steeply from there. There is also a genuine free tier, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which runs Site Audit and a restricted Site Explorer on sites you have verified you own.
Ahrefs added AI answer tracking as Brand Radar. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with Claude on Enterprise, and reports mentions, citations, share of voice and estimated impressions. Paid plans from Lite upwards include a small allowance of tracked prompts, five on Lite rising to twenty on Advanced, with larger packages sold separately.

Keyword and ranking data
This is the clearest split between the two products, and it is worth being blunt about. Ahrefs holds an index. You can type in any domain in the world and get back the searches it ranks for, the pages that earn its traffic and an estimate of what that traffic is worth. Sondavo cannot do that at anything like the same depth and does not claim to.
What Sondavo does instead is read your own Google Search Console account. Those figures are not estimates. They are the impressions, clicks, positions and queries Google recorded for your site, which is a different and in some ways better thing: for the site you own, Search Console is the ground truth that every third party index is trying to approximate. Sondavo imports up to sixteen months and then keeps storing beyond what Google itself retains, 395 days on Professional and 730 on Agency.
For addresses you do not own, Sondavo uses licensed third party ranking data and labels it as an estimate everywhere it appears. It is enough to size up a competitor or to check a prospect. It is not a research index, and if you spend your days mining one, the difference will be obvious within an hour.
Backlinks
Ahrefs wins this outright. The link index is the reason the company exists and there is no honest way to present Sondavo as a competitor to it.
Sondavo's backlink feature, included from the £19 Starter plan, fetches and verifies each linking page individually rather than serving rows from a crawl, rates them, and shows the gap between your links and those of a rival who outranks you. That is useful if you want to know whether the links you have are real and worth anything. It is not useful for prospecting a link building campaign across thousands of domains, which is what Ahrefs is for.
Technical SEO
Both products crawl your site and report faults. Ahrefs Site Audit checks for over 170 issues; Sondavo's crawler names eighteen fault types. On coverage alone Ahrefs is ahead by a wide margin, and if you want an exhaustive technical inventory that is the one to buy.
The difference is what happens after the list appears. Sondavo's eighteen are each written out in plain English: what the fault is, why it matters, what to do about it and which of your pages have it, with the pages ordered by the clicks they currently earn so the most valuable fix is the top row. The design assumption is that the reader is not an SEO and will not know what a canonical mismatch is, so the page explains rather than labels.
A longer list is more thorough. A shorter, explained list is more likely to be acted on by somebody who runs a business rather than an SEO department. Which of those is worth more depends entirely on who is reading it, and we would not pretend otherwise.
Sondavo also publishes eight of these checks as free tools that need no account and run on any address: robots.txt, redirects, HTTP headers, canonicals, sitemaps, hreflang, snippet previews and keywords. Ahrefs' equivalent depth sits behind verifying that you own the site.
AI visibility
Both products now monitor what AI assistants say. Ahrefs covers more assistants: six on Brand Radar against Sondavo's four, and Ahrefs includes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which Sondavo does not have at all. For a brand whose customers search inside Google, that is a real gap on our side.
Sondavo asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity the questions you approve, and stores each answer verbatim with its date, the businesses it named and the pages it cited. You can read the exact words rather than a score derived from them. Ahrefs publishes mentions, citations, share of voice and estimated impressions; whether it retains full answer text is not stated on its product page, so we have not marked that either way.
The allowances are comparable at the entry point and neither is generous. Ahrefs Lite at £99 a month includes five tracked prompts. Sondavo Professional at £49 a month includes five approved questions on one monitored site, checked weekly across all four assistants, with further five question packs at £15 a month.
Sondavo data
The same question, four assistants, four different answers
Two thirds of the businesses named were named by only one of the four assistants. Six mentions out of 154 were shared by all four.
Read the top bar first. Of the 154 business mentions recorded across those questions, covering 36 distinct businesses, 103 came from a single assistant that none of the other three agreed with. Only 6 were named by all four.
- Sample
- 53 questions where all four assistants answered, 212 answers, 154 business mentions across 8 monitored sites
- Period

- Measured

- Source
- Sondavo aggregate data
Eight sites is a small sample and they are Sondavo customers rather than a cross section of the web. The spread is wide enough to be worth showing; treat the exact percentages as indicative.
What you can do without paying
Both companies have a real free offering, and they are shaped differently.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is substantial: Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per project a month, plus a restricted Site Explorer showing 1,000 backlinks and keywords at a time. The condition is ownership. You verify the site, and the free tier does not analyse sites you have not verified.
Sondavo's free tier is the reverse shape. The eight tools ask for nothing at all, not even an email address, and run on any address including a competitor's. The free account then adds one site, ninety days of Search Console history, a weekly crawl and the opportunity list. It does not include AI monitoring, competitor standings or exports.
If you want depth on your own site for nothing, Ahrefs gives more. If you want to check something on a site you do not own without creating an account, Sondavo is the only one of the two that will.
Pricing
Both publish in sterling, so this is one of the few tool comparisons where the prices can be set beside each other without an exchange rate caveat.
The entry prices look similar, £19 against £23, but they are not buying similar things. Ahrefs Starter is a restricted tier for viewing search data; the first plan most people would call usable is Lite at £99. Sondavo Starter at £19 is the whole product for one site minus AI monitoring and competitors, and Professional at £49 adds both.
The honest framing is not that one is cheaper. It is that Ahrefs is priced as a professional research tool, and if you use it as one it is worth the money. Sondavo is priced for a single site whose owner wants to know what is wrong with it. Somebody paying £99 a month for Ahrefs and using it once a fortnight to check their own rankings is overpaying for an index they are not mining; somebody paying £19 for Sondavo and expecting to run a link building agency on it will be disappointed.
Where Ahrefs beats Sondavo
Every comparison on this site carries this section. If we could not fill it honestly, the comparison would not be worth publishing.
01The link index, and it is not closeAhrefs' backlink data is the category benchmark. If your work involves prospecting links, auditing a competitor's profile or valuing a domain, buy Ahrefs. Sondavo verifies the links you have; it does not hold a map of the web.
02Keyword research at scaleKeywords Explorer against a full index is a different activity from reading your own Search Console. If you need to size a market you are not in yet, or build a content plan from scratch across thousands of terms, Sondavo has nothing equivalent.
03Technical audit breadthOver 170 checks against Sondavo's eighteen. For a large or complex site, particularly an ecommerce catalogue, that difference will surface faults Sondavo does not look for.
04More AI assistants, including Google'sBrand Radar covers six assistants including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Sondavo covers four and has neither of Google's. If AI Overviews are where your customers see answers, Ahrefs measures something we currently cannot.
05Historical depthFive years of history on Advanced, and unlimited on Enterprise, against 730 days at the top of Sondavo's range. For long term trend work Ahrefs holds more.
Where Sondavo has the advantage
01Real answers before you sign up for anythingEight tools that need no account, no card and no ownership verification, and that run on any address. Ahrefs' free depth is real but conditional on proving the site is yours.
02Written for somebody who is not an SEOEvery fault, opportunity and AI finding is explained in ordinary English with the affected pages attached and a stated next step. Ahrefs is built for people who already know what the metrics mean, which is the right choice for its audience and the wrong one for ours.
03The assistant's actual words, keptSondavo stores each AI answer verbatim with the date, the businesses named and the pages cited, so you can read what was said rather than a number derived from it.
04One bill for Google, technical and AIProfessional at £49 a month covers Search Console analysis, a daily crawl, competitor standings and AI monitoring on one site. The equivalent shape at Ahrefs starts at Lite for £99 with five tracked prompts.
05Nothing on the page that the product does not doWhere a figure cannot be measured, Sondavo says so instead of filling the space with an estimate. That is a design rule rather than a feature, and it is why the free check will tell you the index does not know your site yet rather than showing you three zeroes.
Which should you choose?
Find the line that describes you. Several of them point at Ahrefs.
Backlink research or link building is a regular part of your work
Buy Ahrefs. Nothing in this comparison should talk you out of it.
You research sites you have no access to, several times a week
Ahrefs. An index is the product you need, and Sondavo is not one.
You have one site, you own it, and you want to know what to fix
Sondavo. Your own Search Console data plus a crawl, explained, from £19 a month.
You need AI answer monitoring for under £50 a month
Sondavo Professional at £49 covers four assistants. Ahrefs' first plan with tracked prompts is Lite at £99.
Google AI Overviews are where your customers see answers
Ahrefs. Brand Radar covers AI Overviews and AI Mode; Sondavo does not.
You are an agency doing research for clients and reporting to them
Both, and most agencies will end up with both. Ahrefs for the research, Sondavo for the ongoing per client reading and the white labelled report on the Agency plan.
Answer it on your own site first
Before paying anyone, including us: the free check reads Google for any address you give it, and the eight free tools run without an account. Neither asks for a card.
Common questions
- Is Sondavo a replacement for Ahrefs?
- For most Ahrefs users, no. Ahrefs is bought for its index, and Sondavo does not have one. Sondavo replaces Ahrefs only if you were using it to watch your own site's rankings and technical health, which is a small part of what Ahrefs sells.
- Which is cheaper?
- Sondavo Starter is £19 a month against Ahrefs Starter at £23, but the comparable full plans are Sondavo Professional at £49 and Ahrefs Lite at £99. Both prices were read from the vendors' own pages on 30 August 2026.
- Does Ahrefs track AI visibility?
- Yes. Brand Radar covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with Claude on Enterprise. Paid plans include between five and twenty tracked prompts depending on tier, and larger packages are sold separately.
- Can I use Ahrefs for free?
- Yes, through Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which runs Site Audit and a restricted Site Explorer on sites you have verified you own. It does not analyse sites you have not verified, so it cannot be used to research a competitor.
- Does Sondavo have backlink data?
- It has backlink verification from the £19 Starter plan: each linking page is fetched and checked individually, rated, and compared against a better ranked rival's links. It is not a web scale index and it is not a substitute for Ahrefs if link research is your job.
- Would I ever run both?
- Agencies commonly would. Ahrefs answers questions about the wider market and about sites you have no access to. Sondavo answers questions about a specific site you do have access to, using that site's own Google data, and reports on it in language a client can read.

Search breadth against AI reach
The two axes that separate these products, both counted from published facts rather than judged. Sondavo and Semrush land on exactly the same point, which is the useful part: on raw capability they are close, and what separates them is price, currency and everything one of them does outside search.
